Between the road junction of Kurunagala
and Anuradhapura lies the magnificent
rock fortress citadel of Yapahuwa, also
known as Fire Rock, evidence of volcanic
activity millions of years ago.
Less then 2 kms from here lies the
Kaikawala Cave Temple. The land here is
volcanic as is evidenced by granite rock
outcrops and different colours in the
rock showing further evidence of heavy
metals like copper.
Many granite outcrops shelter a cave
temple and the semi covered areas
beneath huge rock outcrops provide
isolated areas for meditation. Such an
area is the volcanic outcrops near
Kaikawala Cave Temple.
If you
visit the area, do go beyond the temple
to see the amazing volcanic rock
formations.
