CORAL
GARDENS HOTEL HIKKADUWA SRI LANKA CALL

The
imposing red brick Coral Gardens Hotel is a 3 star property
that offers the best accommodation in the popular bustling
resort of Hikkaduwa on the
South Coast of the tropical island of Sri Lanka.
Hikkaduwa is famous for its
coral reef. The main advantage of Coral Gardens Hotel over others in Hikkaduwa is that the accommodation and
resort facilities are to a higher standard than others in
this town which is not the most up market of resorts. The
elevation on 4 floors ensures that the views over the coral
reefs and the reef at low tide is the best in the vicinity.
The drawback is that all the rooms with the exception of the
suite (which we were unable to inspect), do not have
balconies
In
accordance with our Visit, Stay at and Inspect before
recommending policy of our UK office, The Coral gardens
Hotel at Hikkaduwa was visited by our UK directors on
Saturday 19 December 2009. We stayed in Superior
Corner Room No 301 which afforded the best views of any of
the rooms except the suite, which we were told on arrival
was occupied despite having been booked in advance.
Hotel accommodation is in 4 room
types – the hotel operates only 60 odd of the 100 plus
rooms:
SUITE:
There is only 1 suite on the highest level and this is the only
room with a balcony. We had originally planned to stay in this
accommodation.
SUPERIOR CORNER ROOMS:
These are the best rooms with 2 window areas, offering
magnificent scenic views over the bay and the corals bordering
the beach which are exposed at low tide. The bathrooms have twin
basins. There are 3 superior corner rooms on each floor, the
higher the room the better the view. Most images used on this
page were taken from our room 301.
SUPERIOR ROOMS:
These are the better rooms than the standard rooms but unlike
the superior corners have only one window area
still offering pleasant sea views.
STANDARD ROOMS:
Of which there are only 10
The reception with its clay ceiling lamps and shining terracotta
tiled floor which reflects the light is the first positive
impression on arrival and reassurance that this is one of the
better hotels in a not too up market holiday resort.
The lounge and restaurant
facilities have been improved in the renovation after the tsunami.
The dining room is pleasant and spacious with secluded bay areas
overlooking the pool. There is the option of out door dining in the
semi covered terrace. Cuisine is to a high standard with ample
choice at Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner which is buffet style.
The 2
swimming pool areas complement the design of the long building built
in pleasant brick red which glows during the sunset. As we visited
in the Christmas week, we saw Santa looking out protectively over
the pool where diving instructions were taking place. The public
areas look out into a large tropical garden beyond the pools and
this garden fronts onto the beach with its fleet of glass bottomed
boats.
Hikkaduwa beach is frequented by many touts. Fortunately, the hotel
has its own cordoned off pier and PADI Australia approved boats. The
gardens offer controlled access to the main Hikkaduwa beach. Popular
amongst guests is a walk along the corals at low tide.
In
summary, one of the better hotels in a not too up market resort,
offering access to the natural beauty of Hikkaduwa and its coral
reefs, with just the right degree of seclusion from the bustling
beach crowds and hectic night life.
