AMANWELLA
RESORT
We recommend travellers
combine stays at both
Amangalla
in Galle and Amanwella. Amangalla, approximately 100km south of
Colombo, the capital, is the ideal starting point and provides the
opportunity to explore the historic Galle fort as well as the scenic and
cultural attractions of the region. From Amangalla in Galle it is a 2
hour drive to Amanwella , with its tranquil setting and abundance of
swimming and sun bathing opportunities.
Amanwella is situated amidst
a mature coconut grove fronting a crescent shaped beach close to the
village of Tangalle in southern Sri Lanka. The resort derives its name
by combining the words ‘aman’ or peace in
Sanskrit, and ‘wella’, the Sinhalese name for beach. Flanked by two
rocky headlands and raised above the beach, the resort comprises 30
suites, each with its own terrace and plunge pool.
The entrance is reached along a small gravel road, which leads into the
pebbled courtyard. The resort’s architecture pays homage to Sri Lanka’s
renowned architect Geoffrey Bawa, with its use of materials such as
stone, timber and clay tiles.
Accommodation:
Suites: Suite interiors are decidedly contemporary, with ocean or
coconut plantation views on one side and access to a plunge pool on the
other. Each has a spacious private terrace. The plunge pool is
accessible from the entrance to the suite. Sliding wooden panelled doors
open the suite to cooling breezes. The views from the suites are
especially captivating at sunset. Sliding panels partition the bathroom
from the main room.
Swimming Pool:
The
Swimming Pool, which features a unique “internal wall” design, overlooks
the crescent shaped beach. At 47 metres long and 14 metres a its widest
point, the pool also has a large terrace with sun loungers.
Restaurant:
The
Restaurant offers vistas of the coconut grove and beach. It serves both
Mediterranean and local cuisine, with fresh fish delivered daily by the
local fishermen.
Lounge Bar:
The
Lounge Bar offers views over the ocean and coconut grove and is also
available for light snacks. The Beach Club and Pool Terrace provide
lunch and snacksthroughout the day.
Spa Treatments:
Spa
menus including facials, massages and body treatments, can be enjoyed
either in the privacy of guest suites or in selected garden locations
amidst the coconut grove.
The Beach:
Amanwella’s golden sand beach is located in an 800m crescent-shaped
cove, fringed with palm trees. During the winter months guests can enjoy
swimming, while snorkelling can be easily accomplished along the
southern headland, usually protected from the ocean swell during the dry
season. Complimentary snorkelling equipment is available. During the
summer months large waves make swimming conditions less favourable, but
beach strolls and sunbathing are particularly enjoyable with the cooling
onshore breeze.
Village Nature Walks:
Amanwella is situated in the heart of Wella Wathuara village. An early
morning or evening stroll along the village paths that wind through the
jungle provide an interesting insight into daily village life. Chances
abound to also view the diverse wildlife in the area including monkeys,
birds, mouse deer, monitor lizards, hare and mongoose.
