The
Eden Hotel on Beruwela Beachon the South West coast of Sri Lanka remains
one of the most popular beach hotels in Sri Lanka. In accordance with
our “Visit, Stay
overnight at and Inspect before recommending Policy”
it was last inspected by us in February 2007 although we also stayed at
the hotel in December 2008 on a personal visit.
The
unique selling point of the Eden Hotel is the mammoth swimming pool which
is the centre piece of the property. The bridge that crosses the pool
gives the setting character.
Accommodation is in 3
categories:
The Standard Rooms on the upper floors. These have teak wooden
floors. Other than this there is nothing special to commend these rooms
which we categorise as 3 star plus accommodation.
Ground floor garden
deluxe rooms with marble floors which are 4 stars and which offer
easy access to the pool, tropical gardens and beach. These also have
very large bathrooms
Paradise Rooms which are deluxe and of a much higher 5 star
standard, have top floor views and provide access to a private lounge on
the Paradise Suite floor. These are some of the best rooms available in
Sri Lanka beach hotels.
Penthouse Suites of which there are 2
All rooms have sea view
balconies or terraces in the case of the garden rooms and face the
mammoth pool.
The Paradise Rooms are by far our favourite and resemble suites. With 4
poster beds and superior furnishings they are of a totally different
category to the standard rooms. Sited on the top floor the room balcony
views over the pool are also superior.
Buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner is served in the large main dining room
whose windows front onto the swimming pool. The "fish market a la carte" pavilion
offers semi covered dining, away from the main building closer to the
beach. Barbeques are held on dry
nights enabling dining under the stars. There is also a signature dining
restaurant on the higher floors. Another pleasant aspect of the Eden is
teak floored Captains Deck which fronts onto the pool.
There is also a Spa at the
Eden Resort, with a pleasant frontage onto a garden pond and some cool
equipment.
When we last visited Eden Hotel on a private visit in December 2008,
there were less than 15 guests in this large establishment, although it
was only 3 days before Christmas. This year with an end to the war, Sri
Lanka has again become one of the hottest tropical destinations around
and the situation has changed dramatically.
In
summary a 4 – 5 star beach resort on a pleasant beach stretch shared
with the sister 3-4 star Riverina and 3 star Club Palm Garden Hotels
which are part of the same hotel group, as well as the 5 star Ayurvedic
Lanka Princess Hotel . Be
careful which room category you book into because each is different and
choose the Paradise Rooms if you can.
