Kosgoda Beach Resort hotel is sited between the bustling holiday resorts of Beruwela Bentota 10 kms to the North and Hikkaduwa
to the South. In accordance with our Inspect and Visit before
recommending policy it was visited by us on Saturday 2 January 2010.
Our party stayed in Duplex Villas 105 and 108 facing the lagoon. See
hotel site map at bottom.
Kosgoda Beach
Resort is a challenging difficult hotel to review. It is easy to fault
it on basic maintenance as for over a year it had few overseas visitors
until the end of Sri Lanka’s civil war. Many rooms as well as the spa
were left unused. There is little, however, than an equally quick “Spick
and Span” campaign would not cure. There is much in the potential of
the resort that deserves both mention and indeed closer scrutiny from
overseas tour operators.
The hotel to us has 2 unique selling points:
(1) Kosgoda is located on a quite stretch of beach between, as mentioned
earlier, much busier resorts. On one side it faces the lagoon (from
which there is some traffic noise in the rooms towards that side) whilst
on the other there is this delightful stretch of almost deserted beach,
on which turtles have been observed at night.
(2) The sense of privacy and quite is enhanced by the spacious duplex
Villas which offer on the ground floor a sitting area, an open air
bathroom and on the upper floor a teak wood floor covered bedroom. All
villas have a private terrace area, adding to the sense of privacy. This
is the type of hotel room accommodation a wedding couple or a small
extended family wanting an area of privacy to entertain friends in their
own cottage would welcome.
Kosgoda Beach Resort is considered a 3 star property but could easily be
upgraded to a 4 star property offering privacy advantages over even
other larger deluxe properties on Sri Lanka’s south coast.
Kosgoda
hotel to us created a favourable first impression from the
moment of entry. The public areas are full of ponds with water
everywhere. The reflections in the water create a sense of
natural beauty close to the sea. Fish and even ducks within the
pond add to the natural beauty. There are islands within these
ponds where one can enjoy snacks and a la carte dining.
The free form swimming pool is a delight. It is also beautiful
because the villas and restaurant reflect in it.
A short walk from the pool brings you to the deserted beach.
There is a choice of dispersed accommodation throughout the
resort and the location of your duplex villa makes all the
difference.
A site map is included below. The accommodation units blend
in pleasantly into the resort setting and the white walls with
the red bricks provide a pleasant contrast.
Nearby is
the Kosgoda turtle hatchery.
Definitely a resort with potential and some unique characteristics
that should not be ignored by travel agents and tour operators in Europe
