Kandy the hill capital of Sri Lanka is 3 hours drive into the island interior from Colombo International Airport. An interesting alternative is to journey by rail on the Sri Lanka Railways observation car from Colombo Fort Railway Station. Every August, the Kandy Perehera festival or Perehera attracts visitors from all over the world.

Kandy, the historic royal capital of the ancient Kandyan kingdom which was the last to fall to British colonial rule, is steeped in history and culture. The foremost landmark is the world famous Temple of the Tooth Relic. There are, however, less well known but fascinating temples like Lankatilleke and Gadaladeniya built by the kings of the Kandyan kingdoms as well as the Matale Vihara enroute to the rock temples of Dambulla in the Cultural Triangle. If travelling by car to Kandy from Colombo do stop at the Rajamaha Vihara enroute.
