This epic train journey
gives you a pentrating
glimpse both of the scenic
beauty and of the culture
and way of life in the hill
country as no road trip can.
Sri Lanka Railways provide
an observation car service
from the Fort Railway
Station in Colombo to Kandy;
the hill capital of Sri
Lanka and onto Nanu Oya.in the Central Highlands in the heart of the Tea Country.
The fascinating 8 hour
journey passes through tea
estates and the misty hills
of the Central Highlands.
You will see tea estates,
villages, local people
including tea leaf pluckers
on your epic journey. This
is one of the great rail
journeys of Asia, although
not quite in the luxury of
the Orient Express, the
Observation Car provides one
of the most comfortable of
carriages on Sri Lankan
trains.
The steaming heat of the
coast around Colombo gives
way to the cooler climes of
the hill country and you see
a marked drop in temperature
as cool mists engulf the
observation car.
Between Kandy and the town
of Nanu Oya (the train
journey takes 5 hour to
traverse 72 kms) the
observation car passes
through tea estates and you
see waterfalls, villages and
even local people walking
along the tracks from the
comfort of your carriage.
From Nanu Oya it is a 16 km
road journey to Nuwara Eliya
or “Little England”
