Pigeon Island Resort named
because it is sited opposite the Pigeon
Island is the newest addition to the
hotels on Nilaveli beach considered
amongst the finest beaches on the East
Coast of Sri Lanka.
Travelling distance from Colombo to Trincomalee is approximately 260 kilometres whilst from the International Airport to Tricomalee will be an approximate 290 kilometres. We visited Pigeon
Island resort during the worst floods in
Sri Lanka for decades. The Pigeon Island
opposite the hotel gave protection from
the waters on the day of the Tsunami in
2004 when the worst of the waves broke
their strength on Pigeon Island, thus
sparing the hotel. Renovated, this is
still a hotel in the midst of
development, using its strategic
advantages of location on one of the
finest beaches in Asia. Here the beaches
are deserted and you can walk on sun
drenched beaches for a km
on either side without encountering
crowds. Getting to the hotel from the
main Nilaveli Road can be an adventure
in itself, as we found the road flooded.
This is a hotel for those who enjoy an
isolated location and the feel of being
away from it all.
There is plenty to do at the
resort, if water sports in exotic
Indian Ocean waters or just sun
bathing on plam fringed beaches
appeals.
Encrusted with strikingly beautiful coral reefs with shoals of brightly coloured fish, Pigeon Island is located north of Trincomalee, off Nilaveli one of the finest beaches in Sri Lanka - wide stretches of sand and what appear to be miles of clear shallow water.
Pigeon Island Resort, with only 36
rooms is an uncrowded place of blissful
isolation.
Guests staying in one of the six suites
enjoy panoramic views of the beach.
The suites feature stylish design, two bedrooms and a private butler for more personalised convenience supported by general room service.
The resort's natural beauty comes
alive after dusk in the evening.
