The main attraction of Tissamaharama is the temple and the nearest accommodation to it is the Tissmaharama Rest House. This is a medium grade Ceylon Rest House, now owned by the Ceylon Hotels Corporation. The large rest house is sited by the Tissa Wella or tank. This provides basic accommodation and also incorporates a large suite. The setting around the swimming pool is quite pleasant as well. The potential is, however, wasted by the generally poor maintenance of the buildings, cracked window glass was in evidence during our visit. This problem of poor maintenance is endemic in government owned businesses and buildings, so the sale of the Ceylon Rest Houses or participation of the private sector is to be welcomed.

Tissamaharama is a town in south-eastern Sri Lanka. It used to be the capital of the Sinhalese Kingdom of Ruhuna as early as the 3rd century B.C. Only few buildings from that period can still be seen today. The large artificial Tissa Wewa lake, which was a part of a sophisticated irrigation system, also dates from that time. Today, the town mainly serves as a starting point for visits to Yala National Park and Kataragama.
